How Alcohol Metabolism Works

Your liver metabolizes alcohol at a relatively constant rate of approximately 0.015% BAC per hour. This rate cannot be significantly changed by coffee, water, exercise, or cold showers β€” only time reduces your BAC.

US vs EU Standard Drinks

A US standard drink contains 14g of pure alcohol: a 12 oz (355ml) beer at 5%, a 5 oz (148ml) glass of wine at 12%, or a 1.5 oz (44ml) shot of spirits at 40%.

An EU standard drink (or unit) varies by country but typically contains 10-12g: a 330ml beer at 5%, a 125ml glass of wine at 12%, or a 25ml measure of spirits at 40%. UK units contain 8g of alcohol.

The Widmark Formula

BAC% = (Alcohol in grams) / (Weight in grams Γ— r) Γ— 100

Where r is approximately 0.68 for males and 0.55 for females.

FAQ

What's the difference between US and EU drink sizes?
US standard drinks contain 14g alcohol (12 oz beer, 5 oz wine, 1.5 oz spirits). EU standard drinks contain 10-12g (330ml beer, 125ml wine, 25ml spirits). The calculator auto-sets the correct sizes when you switch regions.
How accurate is this calculator?
It uses the scientifically validated Widmark formula, but individual metabolism varies Β±30% due to genetics, liver health, food intake, and tolerance.
Can I speed up alcohol elimination?
No. Coffee, cold showers, exercise, and water do not speed up liver metabolism. Only time reduces BAC.
Why do women get higher BAC than men?
Women typically have a lower percentage of body water (55% vs 68%), so the same amount of alcohol is less diluted.
Can I drive if the calculator says I'm under the limit?
Never rely solely on a calculator. Impairment begins well below legal limits.
